Tutoring Sessions

Before you decide to go ahead with tutoring, here’s what happens:

I will arrange to meet with you and your child prior to arranging tutoring. What makes tutoring work so well is the one-to-one relationship between the student and tutor and it’s important that your child feels comfortable with me.

Take a look at this handy document ‘A Parent’s Guide to Private Tuition’ which provides a lot of useful information. https://www.thetutorwebsite.co.uk/download/A%20Parent%27s%20Guide%20to%20Private%20Tuition.pdf

What happens in the lessons?

Where?

Tuition is best to take place in your home, in a quiet place away from distractions and with a responsible adult present in the home. It is reassuring to children and tutors to know that parents or carers are near and can be present at any time. Bedrooms are not suitable for tuition. If you are unable to provide a quiet, working space at your home, then sessions can take place in my home, under prior agreement.

Lessons are one hour in length and focus on building on the skills your child is learning at school. During the lesson I will set a homework task each week.

In each lesson:

  1. We’ll discuss how they found the homework including any challenges to learning.
  2. We’ll review their homework to check  their progress and understanding.
  3. Based on their learning style, we’ll go through tasks for reading and writing with clear and simple techniques and explanations.
  4. I will model examples before asking any student to try it for themselves.
  5. They will complete tasks such as answering questions, essay writing techniques and focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar with my guidance and feedback.
  6. I’ll set some homework for the next lesson.

Expectations

What you can expect from Essentially English Tutoring:

I will ensure that all work is thoroughly prepared in readiness for the tuition period. Your child will receive 1:1 with immediate feedback and any work set will be marked in readiness for the next session.

All students will be treated with respect and in a friendly and polite manner.

I will arrive promptly and if in the unlikely event I need to cancel or re-arrange a session you will be informed 24 hours beforehand.

I will provide past exam papers and example materials.

I simply ask that your child completes any tasks set in readiness for the following session.

Additional study is important for helping your child achieve their goals, but I truly hope that they will also enjoy the sessions. It may also begin a lifelong relationship with a love of literature; that would be perfect!

Fees and Payments

Lessons are £30 per lesson/per person. A lesson for two or more students is £25 each.

Fees should be paid at the end of each session by BACS. Alternatively, you can pay monthly and you will receive an invoice, which must be paid within 7 days of receipt. See terms and conditions regarding this.

I will travel up to 15 miles but there is a surcharge for travel, if I have to travel outside of Tiverton which will be discussed with you prior to the lessons.

Cancellation Policy
